How it started

The Little Friends project started in 1999 through the vision of two Swedish women Gunilla Naumann and Eva Lena Hallmark. Moved by the poverty cycles in which the Roma people live and the lack of education among the Roma kids, they started by renting a house and receiving a group of kids from a local neighborhood in Shutka. The idea included training workers from the Roma community who would also invest in their own people by working in the project. The capacity of the project has been 20 kids per year and so far we have more than 200 kids finishing the program and most of them have continued their education in primary school. In our school the children have shown great results and their good performances have been noticed by their teachers in the public school system. In addition, over the years we have been able for couple of years to sponsor and help the kids going to school with school supplies and food and hygiene materials.
