Shutka and the Romani culture

Shutka is a neighborhood/suburb on the edge Skopje, the capital of Macedonia and is predominantly populated by Roma people. Some estimates place the population at around 25.000 people. It started as a settlement for the Roma people after the '63 earthquake but soon the population of Skopje grew and it became a part of the wider city. The Roma people are friendly and communicative with a love for music evident at their weddings which are spectacles of music and color. Most of the people in Shutka live in poverty and have very poor living conditions. The number of kids who don’t go to school is high mostly because parents don’t value education. It’s not uncommon for some families to send their kids to beg or to collect plastic bottles that are later sold for recycling.
